De Grendel Wine Estate

The Farm

Sir David Graaff first planted vines on De Grendel in 1999, almost 200 years after the last vines were destroyed. Since then De Grendel has become synonymous with exquisite wines, borne of the Graaff's love of the soil and scientific approach to winemaking. De Grendel, meaning latch or lock in Dutch, is one of Cape Town’s oldest farms, stretching out over almost 330 hectares on the fynbos-covered slopes of Tygerberg Hill. The breathtaking view of Table Mountain from the farm, 350 meters above sea level, is arguably the best in the Cape winelands. On a clear day, you can see all the way from Table Bay to False Bay, and sometimes even on to Cape Point. First awarded to the Danish settler Claas Mayboom by Governor van der Stel all the way back in 1720, De Grendel van de Tijgerberg was bought by the iconic South African businessman and politician Sir David De Villiers Graaff in 1890 to be used as a breeding and resting ground for the prized purebred Arab horses that he bought while travelling in Argentina. When he returned to his then-home Fernwood, the horses' health deteriorated in the wet climate of Newlands, and on the advice of his veterinarian, he was told to find more suitable stabling. As the story goes, he undertook a trip by ox wagon to Muizenburg. Arriving, the South Easter was blowing and the beach was filled with blue bottles and smelly sea grass. He immediately turned north and arrived at the farm, on the slopes of the Tygerberg. He loved the site and bought it to house his horses.

My and my wife took a helicopter trip to De Grendel Wine Farm for an amazing lunch and ordered back our helicopter with desert and it arrived again in minutes for our flight back. This was a truly amazing experience and it is absolutely the best way to view Cape Town. The pilots and instructors are all very professional but still relaxed and so friendly and welcoming, making for an unbelievable experience. It was very windy on the day we flew so we arrived early to find out if everything will go ahead and before we knew it we were in the helicopter and flying. The wind hardly affected the helicopter at all. I will certainly be back again. First-time helicopter flyers will also have nothing to fear in the hands of these pilots I never even had such a smooth flight in an airplane. Thanks, many times over.

Thanks to Cape Town Helicopters a regular lunch date became an extraordinary afternoon! The staff was friendly and efficient and the pilot excellent. When you see our beautiful city from the sky it is clear why so many consider Cape Town a top destination. We had a superb lunch at De Grendel Wine Estate - their famous Koetshuis Sauvignon Blanc certainly worth its price! This is how special memories are made. Definitely recommendable!

On a beautiful Friday afternoon, we had an awesome afternoon with Cape Town Helicopters, flying us to De Grendel Wine Estate, for lunch. I am a nervous flyer but was immediately put at ease, and enjoyed the flight tremendously, wish it could carry on for a few more hours. De Grendel Wine Estate, is superb, and the view, good food and wine make it a memorable experience. It was great to be picked up by Cape Town Helicopters, after our meal, and no need to battle the traffic. Highly recommended.
